  • Manual therapy involves stretching, soft tissue therapy, joint manipulation and mobilisation. It is effective in reducing pain, promoting tissue repair and improving mobility and relaxation.
  • Electrotherapy is the use of electrical signals to manipulate the transmission of pain signals to the brain. The technique can either block pain signals or stimulate the production of pain-relieving hormones. It is often used in the treatment of arthritis, nerve and back pains.
  • Acupuncture is the insertion of fine needles in specific areas to provide temporary pain relief. It can be used to treat knee injuries and migraines, as well as neck and back pains.
  • Hydrotherapy refers to physio exercises done inside warm water. It helps in pain relief, muscle strengthening and joint movement. 

What Should You Expect During a Physio Session?

Once you enrol in a physio program, your therapist will help you formulate your physio goals. The goals will determine the type of technique and the exercises you will practice. Physio goals should be realistic. For example, if you have a fractured leg, you would be interested in improving its mobility before you begin walking exercises.  

Physio exercises can be excruciating at first. However, as you get used to the program, your muscles get accustomed to the movements, and the pain will drastically reduce. Ask friends and family for support. Additionally, practice some of the exercises at home.

Finding a Physiotherapist

Preferably, work with a physiotherapist who specialises in your condition. The therapist should be experienced and reputable. Use social media and medical blogs to learn about renowned therapists in your area. The therapist should adapt to your schedule. For instance, busy professionals would prefer physio sessions during weekends.
